Abstract

This study examines the historical genealogy of the film library, which emerged as a convergence of film and library as a means of facilitating the scientification of education. The objective is to investigate the management and distribution of films as educational materials, using a comparative analysis of three representative catalogs of educational films produced in the United States from the 1900s to the 1930s and three relevant catalogs published in Korea in the 1950s and 1960s. As the first step of the analysis, this paper reviews the film catalogs published by Charles Urban Trading Company in the 1900s, Moving Picture Age - a visual education magazine - in the 1910s and 20s, and H. W. Wilson Company - a publisher and indexing company - in the 1930s, as representatives of each era. By analyzing the form of these catalogs, it becomes possible to trace the evolution of the interests of various stakeholders in the educational film field from the 1900s to the 1930s. During this period, educational film catalogs underwent three phases of evolution. Firstly, they focused on establishing non-theatrical film distribution networks. Secondly, they sought to introduce the concept of film programming, taking into consideration audiences based on educational research. Lastly, they aimed to systematically classify films, similar to books, and demonstrate that films can correspond to the subject classes of knowledge through library science.
