Abstract

In film, visual metaphors are one of the expressive techniques that are associated with the multiple lines of a drama and solidify the dramatic structure. Rather than directly throwing messages through words or language, visual image devices are used to indirectly tell the story of a film, and they have been used as a major cinematic device to convey the message and intention that the film is trying to convey, such as the depiction of characters' emotions and the story, in a sensual and efficient manner. In order to deeply consider visual metaphors that function as an important expressive method in film, we will focus on the film <1987>, which juxtaposes visual metaphors in each important scene to vividly and precisely visualize the film's narrative. The film <1987> uses the object of water as a visual metaphor, depicting the cruel, inhuman, and harsh acts inflicted on people who resist the dictatorship that was solemn in the 1980s, and as a tool to suppress the ethnic identity of that era. The use of visual metaphors, which are placed in the foreground of the space and characters in each major scene, is used as a symbolic element that leads the entire story, not only enhancing the atmosphere of the play, but also playing the role of a mediator that allows the audience to understand and empathize with the situation and image of the characters. Moreover, it has the advantage of functioning as a subplot that solidifies the dramatic structure and contributes to strengthening the narrative, effectively driving the thematic message the film is trying to convey. In the end, we see that in film, visual metaphors can function as masses for a scene or go beyond mere interest-generating devices to function in a significant way that runs through the film's epic progression and be extended into instruments that elastically guide the film's main storytelling.
