Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the influence of psychiatric nurses' human rights awareness on their attitudes toward people with mental illness. Methods: A total of 140 psychiatric nurses working in psychiatric wards across South Korea participated in an online survey conducted from October 16 to October 31, 2023. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 26.0, employing independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between human rights awareness and attitudes toward people with mental illness. Human rights awareness was positively associated with the subscales of authoritarianism, benevolence, social restrictiveness, and community mental health ideology. Multiple regression analysis confirmed that human rights awareness significantly predicted more positive attitudes toward individuals with mental illness. Conclusion: Psychiatric nurses with greater human rights awareness tend to hold more positive attitudes toward people with mental illness. These findings highlight the need for educational, research, and institutional initiatives aimed at fostering human rights awareness and promoting more inclusive and supportive attitudes in psychiatric nursing practice.
