Abstract

This study attempts to look at how EFL learners in Jeju Island, where both Jeju dialect and standard Korean are used alternately, perceive the influence of their bidialectalism on their English learning and to explore specific ways to do empirical studies on the effect of bidialectalism on L2 acquisition. For this, data were collected from 40 university students using a questionnaire about their perceptions on the effect of bidialectalism on their English learning, their learning experience of acquiring Jeju dialect and standard Korean, specific social conditions under which they switch between Jeju dialect and standard Korean, and their perceived English proficiency. The results of the survey showed that more than half of the respondents think their bidialectalism has a positive effect on their L2 English learning and they identified intonation, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and reading as specific language skills which can be positively influenced by their bidialectalism. On the other hand, the respondents who perceive their bidialectalism to have a negative impact on their English learning reported that Jeju dialect seems to interfere with their acquisition of intonation and speaking skill. Furthermore, it was found that the more positive the subjects consider the relationship between bidialectalism and English learning to be, the higher they perceive their English proficiency to be. Most of the subjects also reported that their proficiency of standard Korean is equal to or higher than that of Jeju dialect. Finally, based on these findings, some specific ways to deal with the issue of bidialectalism as a facilitator of language learning were suggested.
