Jeju-do High School Students' Motivation and Attitudes towards Learning English and its Culture

초록

언어에 대한 학습자의 동기와 태도는 제2언어 또는 외국어 학습 및 사회언어학에서 다루는 중요한 논제이다. 이 논문의 목적은 제주도 내 시 지역과 시골 지역 남녀 고등학생들이 영어를 배우고 영어권 문화를 익히는데 대한 동기와 태도가 어떠한지를 고찰하는데 있다. 지역과 성별에 따라 영어와 그 문화에 대한 동기와 태도가 어떻게 다른지를 학습자들에 대한 설문 조사와 교사들에 대한 인터뷰를 토대로 논의하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 연구대상으로 삼은 제주도 내 대부분의 고등학생들은 성별과 학교 위치와 관계없이 영어를 배우는데 있어 통합적 동기보다 도구적 동기가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 영어를 배우는 태도에 있어서는 농촌 학생들보다 도시 학생들이 더 호의를 갖고 있었으며, 도시 지역 여학생들의 태도가 남학생들보다 더 긍정적인 모습을 보였다. 셋째, 영어권 사회, 사람, 문화에 대해서는 성별과 지역에 상관없이 좋지 않은 태도를 나타냈다. 넷째, 도구적 동기가 더 높은 학생들과 영어를 배우는 태도가 더 긍정적인 학생들이 영어성취도 평가에서 좋은 성적을 얻는 경향을 보였다. 영어교사들로서는 학생들로 하여금 영어를 배우는데 있어 더 많은 동기를 유발하게 하고 영어와 문화에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 갖게 하는 활동 또는 과제를 수행하도록 할 때 영어능력이 향상될 수 있음을 주목할 필요가 있다.
