Abstract
In this study, I analyze who wanted to express their thoughts and opinions on what topics and to whom through the “Reader’s Column” of Jeju-Shinbo, which was published in Jeju province in the 1950s. Most of the contributors were males, and their professions varied from ordinary residents to public officials, parents, farmers, and so on. Their names were primarily disclosed as initials or not presented. The topics were varied, including education, society, and administration. The contents were mostly about suggestions and proposals, and there were various types of articles such as criticism, accusations, and appeals. Moreover, authors expressed their opinions very clearly. There were 18 articles written by readers as feedback on news articles. Readers most frequently expressed their opinions toward administrative authorities, and they also showed their thoughts on various subjects such as local residents, schools, specific groups, and politicians. Most of the articles written by readers were negative, with volumes ranging from 200 to 600 characters. These findings show that, despite the Jeju 4.3 Incident and 6.25 War in the 1950s, the readers of Jeju province read newspapers diligently, participated in various social issues, and had the subjectivity to express their thoughts and opinions. Also, it implies that the Reader’s Column of Jeju-Shinbo in the 1950s played a role as the public sphere where readers exchanged their opinions and helped form public opinion.
