초록
Hydrogen fuel cells convert hydrogen efficiently and thus reduce climate change. However, the high cost of cathode catalysts, usually Pt nanoparticles supported on high-surface-area carbon (Pt/C), hinders commercial applications of fuel cells. Pt/C catalysts have the best cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics, but Pt with Co, Fe, and Ni has been allowed to reduce catalyst loading. Nevertheless, transition metal leaching in acidic/alkaline electrolytes is a major catalyst stability issue. As an alternative, alloying Pt with inner transition metals has proven effective. This study examined the effect of inner transition metals/rare earth metals such as Sc, Y, Gd, and La on Pt nanoparticle ORR activity. ORR was performed in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M KOH electrolytes. The results showed that the Pt-Y catalyst had higher ORR activity than Pt/C in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes.
