Abstract
On the basis of work history files contained in the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) and the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS), this paper investigates retirement behaviors of male workers in the Korean labor market. It is found that more than fifty percent of those in our sample of older workers experience partial retirement at one time or another, and that a sizable number of workers experience a reversal in the course of retirement, moving from a state of less work to a state of more work between adjoining waves of the KLoSA and the KLIPS. The results of multinomial logistic regression suggest that the choice of partial retirement reflects financial necessity rather than preferences for leisure. Policy implications are discussed.
