Abstract
This study offers a comprehensive analysis of labor/human rights sectors in Korean sustainability reports. Amid the continuing tension between labor and management in Korea, how the sustainability reports handle labor/human rights issues deserves close attention. Current western studies tend to focus on western contexts overlooking Asian countries, and also mainly deal with environmental issue in sustainability reports. Similarly, existing studies in Korea tend to focus on environmental issue. Although a growing number of studies handle labor or human rights issues, they have yet provided a systematic, comprehensive picture of labor/human rights sectors in the sustainability reports published in Korea. Against this background, this study conducts a complete enumeration of 173 sustainability reports published in 2013 in South Korea, with its focus on labor/ human rights sectors. This study selected 126 reports which conform to GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. The analysis results indicate as follows: in general, labor shows a higher level of disclosure than human rights. There exists internal variation between indexes of both labor and human rights sectors, namely, while LA5, LA6, HR8, HR10 show far lower level of disclosure than other indicators. Based on multiple interviews with various stakeholders, this study provides a tentative conclusion that internal variation is attributed to 1) frequent turnover of employees in charge or outsourcing SR publishing to the third party, 2) lack of top management’s commitment toward CSR and SR, 3) intentional concealing on sensitive issues, and 4) the difficulty of application of some indicators to Korean firms due to contextual differences. This study ends by recommending three research topics which deserve further attention.
