초록

The new wave of 3D films launched by <Avartar> has become an issue in the film-making community. Although that is not the first movie produced by 3D technology,3D movies have lately come into spotlight again due to the movie produced by James Cameron. The reason is that the narrative of the movie is absolutely backed up by the advanced digital technology. That is, the film didn't simply try to show viewers the splendid 3D technology, but the technology is actually the foundation on which its narrative is built. What primarily matters in relation to that movie is not the 3D technology itself but the harmony between it and the technology. In the past, movie viewers just responded to 3D effect itself, but today's movie viewers regard the 3D technology as what's experienced, not as what's merely seen. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine the significance and role of 3D animation used in an actuality film, especially <Avartar> for the film. <Avartar> generates reality and a virtual reality(and drew a line between the two). And that movie conveys a realistic and positive narrative and enriches the imagination of receivers by moving from the reality to the virtual reality and vice versa as if the two belonged to the same age. The movie generates and reproduces a virtual space by utilizing 3D stereoscopic images. Actually, a virtual space is likely to look strange and foreign, but the movie produces synergy effects by supplementing the shortcoming of 3D stereoscopic images and playing up their strength. In a word, that movie makes good use of the benefits of digital films such as an absence of time and spatial restrictions and elastic potentials of expression. Thanks to the advance in digital technology,3D stereoscopic images will make a contribution to the generation of more realistic virtual spaces, and there will be more efforts to interact with viewers. Digital films take initiative in the film market, and movie viewers will have more chances to gain positive experiences with virtual spaces instead of merely watching films in a passive manner. A combination of general stories and fantastic media technology will open a new chapter for the future, which is expected to step up the development of the film industry from 3D technology to 4D or 5D one.
