Abstract

During his lifetime, Van Gogh created about 2,000 artworks (about 850 oil paintings and 1,100 drawings), but the one into which he put his heart and soul the most is the <Potato Eaters>. This artwork is a full-scaled oil painting created in 1885 after many of his practice work, and in which Gogh was trying to show his togetherness with farmers as he was fascinated by the honesty of their lives. When he was in Brabant, Van Gogh included weavers and farmers on his paintings to show his particular interests toward the poor and the weak. Although the <Potato Eaters> had been evaluated as the artwork describing lives of farmers, in this research, we paid attention to the fact that Gogh had not been satisfied by indicating lives of farmers and had connected, to resuscitate Christian symbolism, the scene of 'Holy Communion' with the 'lamp light'. While farmers are in abysmal anxiety, they share their food with others as in the Holy Communion, and simultaneously God's grace is upon the table as the lamp light implies. Therefore, it can be confirmed that they ingest potatoes as physical food, but they ingest light as food of life. The range of this research is limited to Gogh's Brabant life, and the research concentrates on his faith and philosophy of arts indwelled in the <Potato Eaters>. Briefly, the creating background of the <Potato Eaters> is in chapter Ⅱ, the reflections upon the type of arts that Van Gogh supported through a heated controversy among Anthon van Rappard are in chapter Ⅲ, and the discussion centered on Thomas a Kempis and Ernst Renan about Gogh's ideological background that led him to form deep interests in farmers and the poor, which was his artistic pivot, will be revealed in chapter Ⅳ. Lastly in chapter Ⅴ, through his letters with his fellow artist named Emile Bernard, we ascertain what meaning and significance Gogh's arts, which analyzed the gospel with the artistic language of his time, has today.
