고흐의 종교와 예술에 관한 연구 -종교적 인간에 대한 현상학적 해석-

본 논문은 19세기 화가 빈센트 반 고흐의 종교와 예술을 현상학적으로 해석한다. 그의 회심과 죽음에 대한 해석은 그를 ‘광인’에서 ‘성인’까지 다양 하게 평가한다. 고흐의 회심에 대한 담론에서 기독교신앙의 연속성을 강조 하는 새로운 입장이 등장하면서, 자연주의와 영성을 제안하며 종교적 단절 성을 강조하던 기존의 지배담론에 도전하였다. 고흐는 네덜란드 개혁교회의 전통 아래 태어나 성장했지만, 잉글랜드 감리교회를 경험하고 벨기에 광산 목회가 실패하면서 제도종교를 떠나 예술에 전념하였다. 고흐의 죽음에 대 한 견해도 자살과 타살로 양분되는데, 20세기 고흐영화가 자살을 전제했지 만, 21세기 고흐영화는 타살의 가능성을 강화시키며 고흐의 종교적 정체성 을 기독교인으로 판단한다. 앞으로 고흐의 종교적 정체성을 이해하기 위하 여 제도종교의 틀을 넘어서 ‘종교적 인간’의 틀을 적용할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to interpret the religion and arts of Vincent van Gogh, the 19th century Dutch painter. Various interpretations of his conversion and death have been developed. Some people regard Gogh as ‘a lunatic,’ while others worship him as ‘a saint.’ Recent discourses emphasize the continuity of Christian faith, replacing the existing arguments of discontinuity, which describe Gogh as a naturalist, a spiritualist, or an atheist. Though Gogh was brought up within the Dutch Calvinistic tradition, his ministry of Methodism and failure of evangelism in Belgium mines made him to leave his institutional religion and devote himself to artistic activities. The 20th century films on Gogh took his suicide for granted, but recent 21st century films suggested the possibility of murder. Therefore, the application of the new frame of homo religiosus beyond the boundary of institutional religion into Gogh will be helpful for us to understand his identity and spirit.
