Ding an sich, thing in itself>는 불가사의로 남아있는 것이다.

Abstract

This thesis aims at analyzing the aesthetic features that can be seen inKorean traditional folk painting and clarifying what spiritual beauty theycontain. In the painting, we come to discover the aesthetic features suchas <ignoring the mutually proportional relationship between things>,<lacking perspective>, <transforming forms freely> and <reversing theupper and lower positions of a thing freely>. If they are included andexpressed in a word, they can be said to be <disturbing the spatial orderof the visible phenomenal world>. The features that cannot be foundin an orthodox painting come from the peculiar spirit intrinsic to thepainting. Namely, they are the stylistic features due to folk painters'world or nature views. Folk painters did not see 'me' and 'natural objects'as separate but felt that they were one. To them nature was notthe object existing separately from me but the existence inseparably relatedto me. But <perspective> or <the mutually proportional relationshipbetween things> is the painting technique from separating nature fromme and seeing it as the other centering on 'me'. In the viewpoint ofseeing me and nature as one, perspective cannot exist nor the mutuallyproportional relationship between things cannot be fixed. The spatial orderof the visible phenomenal world cannot change firmly when 'I' amseparated from 'nature' in human spirit, while it can always freelychange in the spirit of uniting 'me' with 'nature'. The philosopher I. Kant had made a big impact on the philosophical world by rejecting thedaily idea that <space> was an objective reality outside of me and clarifyingthat it was an emotional transcendental form. It was the doctrinethat published the limitations that man could not but have a relative understandingof the world. Thus, <the spatial order of the visible phenomenalworld> cannot be absolute and <Ding an sich, thing in itself> remains mysterious. Peculiarly, <disturbing the spatial order> that folkpainting showed was pictorially approaching to the truth of the theoryof space clarified by Kant by ignoring and dissolving the absolute objectivityof space. For that reason, folk painting refuses a given plasticviewpoint and freely includes all various viewpoints. Just such a viewpointis the spirit of folk painting that can be connected with theMiddle Path. The Middle Way is the essence of profound Buddhistphilosophy. It is not simply the middle. It is the state of excluding bothextremes and even the middle. It means the attitude of considering allthe states as they are. Surprisingly, the folk painting made by the populacequietly opens and shows one aspect of a high level of spiritualbeauty.
