Abstract

Gzhan Stong (takong, 他空) tradition in Tibetan buddhism, which asserts that the ultimate is not non-existent or empty but only “the other things” are non-existent, was established by Dol-po-pa in the 14th century. But its ideological basis can be traced back to the Culasuññata sutta of Majjhima-Nikāya which says something remains in sūnyatā, or positively interprets the emptiness. In this research, I analysed the Maitreya Chapter of 25,000-line Prajñāpāramitā sutra and Yum gsum gnod 'joms (bṛhaṭṭīkā) to examine Gzhan stong pa’s claim that they are the Indic literary bases of other-emptiness. The Maitreya Chapter extant in Sanskrit and Tibetan is the only text in that three characteristics (trilakṣaṇa) of Yogācāra are explicitly preached in a Prajñāpāramitā sutra except for the 500-line Prajñāpāramitā. Yum gsum gnod 'joms is a commentary of large Prajñāpāramitā sutras. Extant only in Tibetan traslation, it annotates them in the framework of trilakṣaṇa throughout the whole text. In three characteristics, identified with three natures (trisvabhāva), dharmatā corresponding to the perfected nature has a positive connotation of ultimate existence in the term itself. However, the Maitreya Chapter is based on the pivotal model of three natures, and does not explicitly reveal the gzhan stong doctrine. There are still passages that can be developed into the direction of Gzhan stong. On the other hand, Yum gsum gnod 'joms clearly affirms the existence of the ultimate, which is the perfected nature, dharmatā, and tathatā. It utilizes the progressive model connected with gzhan stong interpretation as its basic framework. In addition, its shows an affinity to the doctrine of tathāgata-garbha and Maitreya, the future buddha. Hence, I conclude that it needs a more aggressive interpretation to categorize the Maitreya Chapter in the Indic literary basis for gzhan stong not while Yum gsum gnod 'joms can definitely be one.
