Abstract

This study implements survival analysis on different firms groups categorized by firm age and size. In addition, firm survival and “innovation premium” in high-technology industry and low-technology industry are also examined. Innovation has diverse types, such as new product, improved product, service, process, marketing, and organization types of innovation. This study delves into their different impacts on firm survival. Detailed categorization on both explanatory variables and dependent variable enabled revelation of previously undiscovered aspects. Contrary to previous "innovation premium"of young small firms(Cefis and Marsili, 2006), technological innovation could jeopardize the life of young small firms. The risk of innovation can be different depending on the size and age of firms. Young start-ups with small size are vulnerable to risky novel product innovation but mature medium firms can get significant benefit from process innovation. In addition, advanced method such as Cox hazard analysis with time-dependent covariates is used for presenting those findings.
