As the role and importance of the port industry are expanding as the volume of cargo continues to increase, it is necessary to revise and supplement the definition and classification of Korea's port industry. This study aims to estimate the economic impact of port and related industries in the national and regional economies. Specifically, based on the revised classification of the port industry from legal and industrial viewpoints, we employ micro-data integrated service by Statistics Korea. The analysis results reveal that the national economic contribution of the maritime and port industry in 2017 is estimated at 0.99% in sales and 0.59% in the worker’s sector, and the Busan area is estimated to have the highest economic efficiency of the maritime and port industry. Moreover, the local economic impact of major port cities of Incheon and Ulsan is estimated to be higher than that of other regions. From the perspective of policy suggestions, it is required to continuously estimate the contribution of the port industry to the national and regional economies by using such consistent public data information. Finally, this study is expected to provide useful information and frameworks for formulating policies to address issues related to the port industry.
