仙巖寺는 호남 명산인 曹溪山자락에 위치한 사찰로 분명한 창건 시기는 알 수 없지만 관련 기록과 남아 있는 유적 유물들로 보아 적어도 신라 말기에는 창건된 것으로 추정된다. 이후 고려시대 들어와 大覺國師義天에 의하여 크게 중창된다. 그리고 조선시대 들어와서도 법등이 지속적으로 유지되 었으며, 각종 법회가 열리고 불경이 간행되는 등 호남지역 불교문화의 중심이었다. 현재 선암사에는 고려시대 건립된 3기의 석조부도가 남아있는데, 탑비가 남아있지 않아 구체적인 건립 시기와 배경, 주인공들의 행적에 대해서 알려진 것이 없지만 한 사찰에 동시대에 건립된 3기의 석조부도가 전하 고 있다는 것만으로도 주목을 끌어왔다. 최근 고려시대 석조부도에 대한 전체적인 파악과 양식에 대한 계열적인 연구 성과가 축적되면서 새롭게 접근해야 될 필요성이 요구된다. 선암사에 건립된 고려시대 석조부도 3기는 유사한 양식을 보이면서도 북부도는 기단부와 탑신부의 양식이 신라적인 요소가 강하게 남아있으며, 대각암 석조부도와 동부도는 고려화된 치석 수법과 양식을 함유하고 있다. 세부 장식과 치석 수법에서는 동부도가 간략화와 형식화의 경향이 강하게 진전되었다. 이러한 사실로 보아 3기의 석조부도는 모두 고려전기에 건립되었지만 북부도 → 대각암 석조부도 → 동부도 순으로 건립된 것으로 추정된다. 그리고 신라와 고려시대의 경우 1寺-1僧-1塔-1塔碑가 세워지는 것이 관행이었다. 그런데 한 사찰에 동시대 건립된 3기의 석조부도가 있다는 것 은 당대 선암사의 위상이 상당히 높았음을 간접적으로 시사한다.
Abstract
SeonAm-Temple was located to the central point in the JoGae-Mountain. This temple had been established in the late of Unified Silla Period. It was the center of buddhist culture from Unified Silla Period to Goryeo Dynasty in Honam Country. At present, there are three stone-stupas still left. First, north stone-stupa. Second, stone-stupa of DaeGak-Hermitage. Third, east stonestupa. But, we don’t know when they made. They are very important. Because, they had been established to 1 temple space, in the same age. Recently, study on the form and style of Goryeo Stone-Stupas accumulate. A store of knowledge asks to reconsider the building time, significance and front and rear. Three stone-stupas are much alike in character of form and style. North stone-stupa involves various side of the Unified Silla stone-stupa. DaeGak-Hermitage stone-stupa and East stonestupa have the new trimming stone technique and style. This character showed the form and style of Goryeo Dynasty. East stone-stupa distinguished simplicity and formality in style. Building Time, according to the style, North stone-stupa is first, DaeGak-Hermitage stone-stupa is second, East stone-stupa is third. In the present age, stone-stupa and tabbi were established each one in 1 temple. The fact, three stone-stupas in the same age of SeonAm-Temple, is unique in the history of Goryeo stonestupas.
