Abstract

This study is a part of the interdisciplinary study for making an ethnocartography of the pottery culture in Gyeongsangbuk-do area. And this study aims at marking the chronological, spatial differences and the changes of traits of pottery-making sites in Gyeongsangbuk-do area. For this purpose, researcher of this study checks every discernable pottery-making sites by referring literatures and making a survey of field research. The researcher takes into account a few of attributes regarding a pottery-making site like conditions of location, size of a workshop, types of kilns, organization of a working team and management of workshop in order to consider ethnocartography of pottery-making sites from many angles. Attributes of a pottery-making site have changed with the changes of the times in connection with the circulation domain of pottery, the density of pottery-making sites and central place of pottery-making sites which potters recognize. The change of the type of kilns from the convention type to the improved type in company with improved traffic system have brought about the enlargement of circulation domain of pottery. The circulation domain of pottery produced by a certain potterymaking site extended to the broader area including the metropolitan area. This have resulted in acceleration of competition between pottery-making sites. It have happened to the centralization of pottery-making sites and the intension of producing potteries. So the large pottery making villages have been established and some manufacturing process has been automatized. Recently, the western and urban way of life has been universalized in Korean society and the demand of pottery has rapidly decreased. Now very few pottery-making sites still produce potteries. This study shows the rise and falls of Korean pottery-making sites during the last one hundred years by way of the ethnocartography of pottery-making sites.
