Abstract

Simdogihaeng (Ganghwa-do Travelogue) is a collection of travel essays and poems published in 1906 by Go Jae-hyeong, a classical scholar from Ganghwa-do Island. Go wrote 256 Chinese poems about the villages he visited in his birthplace in Ganghwa-do. He annotated the poems with explanatory notes on the origins, sceneries, historical figures, living conditions, and customs of each village. Go was born in 1846 and raised in Duun-ri, the home of his ancestors. He passed the gwageo, the civil service exam, but he did not serve at the government offices. He passed away in 1916, at the age of 71, and his descendants still live in the same village he did. Go wrote his travelogue during the Korea’s transitional period under Japanese colonial rule and an influx of Western civilization. He wrote it with the intention of recording disappearing local traditions and customs. Simdogihaeng was not created using woodblock printing, but was handed down in two manuscript editions. It contains 256 poems, written during a tour around Ganghwa-do that started and ended in Dudumi-dong, Go’s birthplace. The order of poems is presumed to follow the itinerary of his tour of the villages. It was, largely, a counterclockwise tour of the 17 myeon (townships) of Ganghwa-do. Go visited every village of Ganghwa-do and composed Chinese poems about each village. Simdogihaeng is a valuable record that shows the state of the villages at the time, as it lists the original village names, which are now out of use. In particular, Simdogihaeng is regarded as a significant book because it recorded the names of the villagers as well as in-depth descriptions of concrete features of their lives. It identified about 250 people from 60 families based on their surnames. Simdogihaeng has a particular meaning as an exceptional record that concretely describes the figures of the villages of Ganghwa-do in the early 20th century. This collection of literary works can also be seen as an ethnographic or geographical study on Ganghwa-do as it existed during the early 20th century.
