Abstract
This paper aims at analyzing Godard's <Film Socialisme)> (2010) and his political views on European history. This film is divided into three parts like a sonata form. While partsⅠand Ⅲ show the luxury cruise Concordia and its sightseeing tour along coastal cities in the Mediterranean, part Ⅱ talks about Lucy who lives in the French countryside and is a candidate at local elections. In partsⅠand Ⅲ, Concordia sails along the Mediterranean coast of Algeria,Egypt, Haifa, Palestine, Odessa, Greece, Naples and Barcelona. Quoting many films' archive images of these places taken from various movies, Godard contrasts them with the luxurious scenes of a cruise ship. Many passengers on board the cruise ship are well-off senior citizens. They took away money and gold from all over Europe and manipulated the tragic history of the Mediterranean coast to conceal their guilt. Godard accused them by enumerating scenes of corruption, massacre and war. In short, Godard blamed them for degrading the original meaning of socialism : blinded by money and power, their will faded away. On the other hand, in part II, we can see the young generation who made a break from the past of Europe and wanted to build a democratic society under the ideal socialism. In this film Concordia works as a symbol of the consumer society, and the cameras, gold and animals are metaphors for the accusers who wish to recover real socialism. To express this effectively, Godard quotes a significant amount of film archives related to various places over different times in Europe : from analogue images of low quality to digital images with a high resolution, he often resorts to gold images for figuring politicians blinded by money, and he shows animals and cameras for mocking them. Through all these allusions and devices,Godard wishes to re-establish a more genuine socialism.
