이 연구는 전라남도 진도의 밀양박씨 종중을 사례로 19~20세기 ‘종가 없는 종중’이 형성되고 현재로 변화하는 궤적을 분석한다. 한국의 종중에 대한 연구는 조선시대 종법질서의 확산 과정에서 불천위 조상과 종손의 연결을 중심으로 종가의 상징성에 주목해 왔다. 그러나 불천위 조상의 부재라는 조건에서 지방의 친족을 조직화하기 위한 실천에 대한 관심은 제한적이었다. 진도 밀양박씨는 중앙에서 관직을 역임한 현출한 조상과 연결을 위해, 입향조보다 윗대의 조상을 중심으로 진도 종중을 창출하고자 시도했다. 이들은 조선조 단종의 복위 과정에 협력했다는 박심문이 복권되고 증직되는 과정을 목도하면서 진도 내 밀양박씨를 결집하고, 진도에 그의 별묘(別廟)를 창설하며, 문안(門案)을 마련한다. 이렇게 조직화된 진도의 밀양박씨는 19세기 동안 진도 밖의 밀양박씨와 적극적으로 교류하며, 1905년 박심문의 불천위 추증 과정에도 적극적으로 참여했다. 진도에 종손이 없는 상황에서 진도 종중의 탄생은 ‘종가 없는 종중’의 활동이었고, 이때 중심이 된 것은 진도에 자리한 최장방(最長方)이었다. 진도 밀양박씨 종중의 사례는 한국 종중 연구에서 지방의 맥락을 반영한 변형이 포착되어야 하며, 종가가 없을 수 있는 종중 형성과 운영의 다양성에 대한 포착은 물론, 나아가 유교의 종법 질서가 새롭게 해석되는 장소로 지방의 가능성에 주목할 필요를 제기한다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the trajectory of the formation and transformation of ‘Jongjung without Jongga’ in the case of the Milyang Park Lineage in Jindo, Jeollanam-do, from the 19th to the 20th Century. Previous research on Jongjung of Korea has largely focused on the symbolic significance of Jongga, Bulcheonwi(不遷位) and the role of the Jongson(宗孫). But, there has been limited attention th strategic practices of kinship organization at the local level in the absence of Bulcheonwi. The Milyang Park Lineage in Jindo sought to establish its Jongjung by invoking ancestor of higher generation rather than the initial settler of the region, in an effort to connect with prominent figure who held official position in the central government. In particular, they united aroung Park Simmun(朴審問), an ancestor associated with the restoration of King Danjong(端宗). They established a Byelmyo(別廟) and compiled genealogical records(門案). During the 19th Century, this lineage actively engaged with other Milyang Park lineages outside of Jindo. They also participated in the 1905 initiative to designate Park Simmun as a bulcheonwi ancestor. Despite the absence of a Jongson, the lineage activities were centered on the Choejangbang(最長方), and this was the operations of a ‘Jongjung without Jongga’. This study suggests that Jongjung of Korea must account for diverse local variations. It is also necessary to pay attention to the diverse forms of organization and operation that emerge in a ‘Jongjung without a Jongga’. This raises the need to examine how the Confucian kinship order was reinterpreted within the constraints of local contexts.
