영화<타짜>와 <노팅힐>, TV 드라마<도깨비>를 통해 본 메인 플롯과 서브플롯의 상호 연관성 연구

상업 영화 시나리오와 대중소설, 웹툰과 같은 픽션 시장의 발전으로 인해 스토리텔링 이론에 관한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 작법의 여러 개념 중 창작 영역에서 전통적으로 중요한 위치를 차지해 온 것이 플롯이다. 오늘날에도 많은 작가는 상업성을 담보할 수 있는 플롯(Plot)을 효율적으로 구성하기 위해 치열한 경쟁을 펼치고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 이론서가 핵심 개념에 대한 설명과 그 사례를 중심으로 구성되어 있어 실제 창작 과정에서 발생하는 현실적 문제, 즉 개념 상호 간의 연관성을 설명하는 데 한계를 가지고 있다. 작가들에게 개념 간의 연관성이 중요한 이유는 작법의 주요 개념들이 창작 과정에서는 별도의 독립된 체계로 운영되는 것이 아니라, 상호관계 속에서 유기적인 연관성을 가지며, 이를 통해 해당 픽션(Fiction)이 미학적 통일성을 얻을 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 작법의 핵심 개념인 메인 플롯과 서브플롯이 어떤 상호 연관성을 갖는지 파악하기 위해 가설을 설정하고 이를 두 편의 상업 영화 분석을 통해 검증하였다. 본고가 설정한 가설은 픽션 안에서 주도적 아이디어는 미학적 기준으로 작용하며, 메인 플롯과 서브플롯의 상호 관계는 주도적 아이디어를 구성하는 인과율 속에서 상호 관계를 형성한다는 것이다. 즉 메인 플롯은 주도적 아이디어를 구성하는 가치의 변화 또는 유지와 관련성이 높으며, 서브플롯은 이야기적 가치를 구성하는 사건의 변화 또는 유지에 대해 이유를 구성하는 것과 연관성이 높을 것이라는 가설이다. 두 편의 영화 <타짜>, <노팅힐>그리고 한 편의 드라마<도깨비>를 분석한 결과 세 편 모두 이야기적 가치(Value)를 구성하는 사건들은 해당 작품의 메인 플롯과 밀접하게 연관성이 있었으며, 그 가치변화의 이유를 구성하는 사건들은 메인 플롯과 인과관계를 구성하는 서브플롯의 특징을 지닌 것으로 파악되었다. 따라서 메인 플롯과 서브플롯은 인과관계 속에서 작품의 주도적 아이디어를 구성하는 관계 속에 있다는 가설은 부분적으로 타당하다. 그러나 본 연구는 분석 텍스트의 협소함으로 인해 두 영화와 한 편의 드라마에서 검증된 유사성을 일반화하는 데는 무리가 있다. 향후 플롯 상호 간 상관관계를 보다 일반화시킬 수 있는 원칙을 파악하기 위해서는 다양한 장르를 대상으로 더욱 폭넓은 작품의 분석이 요구된다.
Abstract
Among the many concepts of writing, the plot has traditionally taken a prominent place in the creative field. Many writers are still fiercely competing to efficiently construct plots that can guarantee commercial viability. However, most of the theories are composed of explanations and examples of core concepts, which have limitations in explaining the problems that arise in the actual creative process, that is, the interrelationships between concepts. The hypothesis established in this paper is that the controlling idea acts as an aesthetic standard in fiction, and the interrelationship between the main plot and the subplot forms a relationship in the causality that constitutes the controlling idea. As a result of analyzing the two films <The War of Flower>, <Notting Hill> and one TV series <Goblin>, it was found the events composing value were closely related to the main plot of the work. The characteristics of the main plot and the subplot forming the causal relationship resulted. Therefore, the hypothesis that the main plot and subplot are related constitutes the controlling idea of the work in the causal relationship is partially valid. Apart from some of the proven theories, the result has been difficult to generalize the similarities among the two films and one TV series due to the narrowness of the analytical text. In order to grasp the principles capable of generalizing the interrelationship between plots in the future, a broader analysis of works in various genres is required.
