연약한 영웅, 여성영웅-애니메이션 <나의 붉은 고래(大魚海棠)>와 <센과 치히로의 행방불명(千と千尋の神隠し)>을 중심으로

2000년 이후 중국과 일본 애니메이션에서 여성 캐릭터는 전통적 종속 서사에서 독립적 이미지로 변화하였다. 각 문화의 배경 속에서 여성의 성역할은 다양한 방식으로 구현되었다. 본 연구는 두 작품을 중심으로 여성 주인공의 영웅적 여정을 분석하였다. 분석 대상 작품은 <센과 치히로의 행방불명>(2001)과 <나의 붉은 고래>(2016)이다. 이 연구는 치히로와 춘의 성장 과정속에 보이는 애니메이션 속 여성 캐릭터의 의미와 역할을 조명하였다. 나아가 이들 여성 캐릭터들이 어떻게 새로운 영웅으로 자리매김할 수 있는지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구는 캠벨과 보글러의 남성영웅 서사와 모린 머독의 여성 영웅 서사 이론을 바탕으로 두 작품의 서사 구조를 심층적으로 살펴보았다. <센과 치히로의 행방불명>에서 치히로는 부모로부터 분리된 이후 센이라는 새로운 정체성으로 변화한다. 치히로는 연약한 여성 혼자로서는 어려운 임무를 수행하며 영웅으로 성장한다. 반면 <나의 붉은 고래>의 주인공 춘은 쿤에게 구해지면서 자아 분리를 경험한다. 이 과정에서 여성 영웅이 되기 위한 조건을 갖춘다. 또한 시련의 과정에서 조력자 츄를 만나 새로운 가치관을 확립하고 영웅으로 나아간다. 본 연구는 중국과 일본의 여성 영웅 서사를 비교 분석하였다. 이를 통해 동아시아 애니메이션 속 여성 영웅 이미지에 대한 새로운 시각을 제시하였다.
Abstract
Since 2000, female characters in Chinese and Japanese animation have transitioned from traditional portrayals of subordination to narratives emphasizing independence and empowerment. Gender roles attributed to women have been articulated in varied cultural contexts. This study examines the heroic journeys of female protagonists in two seminal animated works: Spirited Away (2001) and Big Fish & Begonia (2016). By analyzing the developmental trajectories of Chihiro and Chun, this research highlights the significance and roles of female characters in animation and investigates how these characters redefine the archetype of heroism within their respective narratives. Grounded in Campbell and Vogler's theories of the male heroic narrative and Maureen Murdock's framework of the female heroic journey, this study undertakes a thorough examination of the narrative structures of these two films. In Spirited Away, Chihiro transforms into “Sen” a new persona as a consequence of her estrangement from her parents. Through her journey, she undertakes tasks that are daunting and seemingly unattainable for a fragile adolescent, ultimately emerging as a hero. Conversely, in Big Fish & Begonia, Chun embarks on a process of self-discovery precipitated by her rescue by Kun. Through her trials, she meets her guide, Qiu, establishes a renewed set of values, and advances toward embodying heroic ideals. This comparative analysis of Chinese and Japanese female heroic narratives offers innovative insights into the portrayal of female heroism in East Asian animation, enriching the discourse surrounding their cultural and narrative significance.
