Abstract
In this article, the journey of ‘Taiwanese film’ commences from the pivotal moment when Taiwan endeavored to separate from mainland China. It encapsulates the visual narratives that emerged during the period of political independence in the 1980s and the subsequent assertion of cultural independence in the 2000s. The films that symbolize these two distinct periods of independence, political and cultural, are deciphered in this article as ‘two types of youth’. In the first period, the 1980s and 1990s, Kuomindang's Republic of China still existed. The ‘Taiwan New Wave’ centered around Hou Hsiao-hsien, which was born during this period, is made up of the cultures of the Republic of China that were created without a complete political stance and the stories of generations with no experience of mainland China. This is portrayed as the first ‘youth’ in Taiwanese cinema. Over 20 years ago, Taiwanese politics achieved political independence and moved toward greater cultural independence with the change of government from Kuomindang to the Democratic Progressive Party. Therefore, Taiwanese films after 2000’s portray young people born and raised in Taiwan and creating a new culture on the island without any experience of the mainland. This is the second ‘youth’ that Taiwanese movies show. Director Hou Hsiao-hsien's <Goodbye South, Goodbye> (1996) and Jiu Badao's <You are the Apple of My Eye> (2012) serve as poignant self-portraits of young people on the island of Taiwan. These individuals aspire to distance themselves from the Republic of China and embrace a new identity as ‘Taiwan’. The films delve into the ‘wandering’ and ‘anxiety’ of youth, and the ‘direction’ of racing towards the future, presenting Taiwan's issues from two distinct perspectives. They depict emotional transformations, from sadness to joy, and also illustrate spatial movements, such as ‘rural-metropolitan city’, serving as metaphors for Taiwan's real-world challenges. These two films seem to mirror the image of ‘Taiwan’ as a newly created ‘youth’, reflecting the ever-evolving reality of Taiwan's youth.
