Abstract
In modern times, we are convinced not to evaluate a person based on appearance alone, and physiognomy can be explained by pseudo-science or folk psychology. However, in ancient times, the boundaries between science and non-science were ambiguous, so it was common to grasp his fate, personality, and life by looking at his outward appearance and behavior. Physiognomy began a long time ago in China along with the fortune culture and developed into a discipline throughout the ages. Records of Physiognomy can be found in several literatures, and they are also frequently seen in historical prose during the Pre-Qin period. It was considered that this was a universal social phenomenon at the time and that the author intentionally used it when describing a person or event. Therefore, the contents related to the description in the book 'GuoYu' were extracted and classified into two types based on the contents. The study was divided into ‘reinforcing the credibility of prediction’ and ‘emphasizing the extraordinaryness of the character’ and using the above description. In conclusion, it was also confirmed that Physiognomy was recognized as a universal culture at the time, but it was also confirmed that the author of 'GuoYu' used it as a narrative method.
