Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the editing principles of Gaebyuk. For this purpose, I examined what field each article is belonged to and how many each field's articles are, etc. In conclusion, it is to be certain that 'popularity', 'enlightenmentness' and 'reality' are the editing principles of Gaebyuk It seems that this tree principles regulate and determine primary format, a whole direction and the problems what articles to publish in the magazine. It is proved that editors of Gaebyuk made their media an all-around magazine to enlighten popular, and decreased weight of articles related to Chundogyo. Of course, importance of each principle is differently applied to each article. Editors of Gaebyuk, for example, emphasized 'popularity' in articles of religious field, 'enlightenmentness' and 'reality' in those of editorial field, and 'reality' in those of literal field, though, which showed a unity of these three principles. It is held that these principles decided characteristics of the magazine itself. As it were, Gaebyuk was a popular an allaround magazine, not only media for enlightenment which leaded national movement but also magazine to pay attention to 'reali ties' of colonized Korea. To see carefully, Gaebyuk proclaimed to publish various articles besides religion's, to be an all-around magazine. In short, Gaebyuk refused itself to be a religious or Chundogyo's media, to obtain readers in popular. Moreover, as media for the awakening of national consciousness, it underwent all sorts of suppressions by Japan, and played the leader in the change of a national emancipation movement, from cultural one to classical one. The fact that Gaebyuk had a sense to see realities make its position to be without a rival, which can show many concrete realities over politics, religion, history, culture and thought, etc in korean early modern times. However, these three principles are significant problems in korean literature of that times besides Gaebyuk It means that 'popularity', 'enlightenmentness' and 'reality' are concepts which form the modern intellectual. This thesis tried to clear the position and characteristic of Gaebyuk, which, I think, can be to be starting point for researches to explore how the modern intellectual in Korea was formed in 1920's.
