Abstract

The aims of this thesis is to study the characteristics of Chosunmundan and literature of the mid 1920s. In the early 1920s, Korean literature was self-sufficient. Organization which was called Donginji was closed to the public. Works was experimental. And magazine (Donginji) management was amateur. But as Chosunmundan had appeared, Donginji system which represented for the early 1920s was destructed. Chosunmundan was opened to most of contemporary writers in the early 1920s. Also the general public were contributor to Chosunmundan and some of them were recommended. This means Chosunmundan had popular feature. Chosunmundan was based on the general public, and thus we can say Chosunmundan was new form of pursuing openness and publicity. Therefore Chosunmundan should be observed. That is why we should differentiate Chosunmundan from Donginji litεrature. The necessity we differentiate Chosunmundan from Donginji relates to their editing contents. Before 1920s, only poetry and novel were involved in editing. But Chosunmundan involved writers' eternal features and private lifes in its editing. So these articles were interesting to readers. If magazines' forms show signs of changes, works' forms show the last purpose of the change. There were many famous works in Chosunmundan. For example, Kimdongin's Gamja, Nadohyang's Mullaebanga, Hyunjingun's B sagamgua Love letter. Existing arguments said these works were affected by Donginji literature. But it is difficult to understand these works are affected by Donginji literature when we consider works' feature and it's different period. It is not all. Also, we can not overlook Choiseohae, Chaemansik, Leetaejun, Hanseolya, Gaeyongmuk, Parkhwaseong--who represented for the 20s, 30s apeared suddenly in Chosunmundaη. These new writers took the rostrum and reproduction of taking the rostrum was made in the period. This is very interesting point. Their works was divided into two groups: Choisoehae group, Chaemansik group. The former group's subject was survival from poverty and the later group's subject was exploring inner world. Nevertheless they have same way of thinking. That is to say, they had universal and objective point of view. Donginji literature disappeared by appearing objective way of thinking. Now, Summarizing my opinion, first Chosunmundan's distinction was openness. Second distinction of Chosunmundan was concentrating on interest. These two distinctions show that Chosunmundan was purposed to win popularity. Changing of media's feature closely relates to changing of works' tendency. We should not overlook works in Chosunmundan had objective, universal distinctions. These facts show objectivity and popularity were the stream of the mid 1920s.
