Abstract

This article is a book review of Park Yeon-hee’s book. This book does not only make critical discourse at a time when Third World discourse emerged as a subject of discussion, but also examines Asian discourse and planning, which were raised as an expression of anti-communism under U.S. influence in the 1950s, in the context of the Third World. Through Kim Ki-rim and Park In-hwan, who are stepping back from the logic and confrontation between the left and right sides of the liberation period, discussions on liberation period literature, which had been divided around literary groups, can be layered and reconstructed in the context of world history. It also shows the hope of world literature held by Korean writers under the U.S. aid strategy in the 1950s, when the Cold War structure was solidified. On the other hand, the author analyzes the various directions of national literature and world literature discourse widely by major media of this period. As the book shows various camps’ discourse on world literature and critical points of entry, the Third World was not a single ideological entity, and the context of acceptance also depends on the acceptance and the situation of the time. Around the 1970s, the Korean intellectual community was conducting various interpretations and competitive monopoly on the representation of the people, the world, and the third world. Furthermore, the author’s discussion not only identifies the various discourse contexts submitted during this period, but also reveals the ambivalent existence of the U.S. and the unconscious sense of Korean discourse that embraces or monopolizes them. In short, in the postwar, Korean literature was intersected by knowledge called the Cold War and the Third World, and the book is meaningful in that it faithfully identified the conditions and possibilities of critical imagination by contextualizing and reasoning these knowledge.
