Abstract

This treatise has the purpose to study writer’s view of the world on the analogy of character-analyzing. An ostensible reason I pay attention to character is that Lee Chung-jun’s characters are exceptional. So Lee’s characters arouse reader’s interest, but in characterization they are formed not in a live character but in a functional character. The subjects of analysis are 「A Fool and a Stupid Person」(1966), 「A Person Handles a Hawk」(1968), and 「Wall of Rumor」(l971). These are Lee’s early masterpieces. The characters of Lee’s novel have jobs, so they are ordinary people, but are ‘characters of semi-ordinariness' who a bit deviate ordinary lives. It is ‘characters of semi-ordinariness' that don't adapt themselves to professional ethics and functions and repeat a collapse and a skepticism. They don't live vividly and give a hint through fictitious works; they are symbolic characters. In that point Lee’s characterization method exhibits a tendency to conscious and ideal work. Basically, relationship of character has a binominal confrontation. A searching person and a searched person appear in Lee’s novel. Detective novel has a dual story-criminal story and inquiring story. Like that, Lee’s novel has a dual story. A criminal and a detective confront each other to the end in detective novel but a searching person assimilates a searched person in Lee’s novel. In framework of Lee’s novel, reversely, conceptional characters awaken the concreteness of world. The conceptional character is an allegoric character lives in form of conception and awakens society, system and custom. Therefore the reason that Lee often uses an exceptional character is not that he want to express a universal value through a concrete situation, but that he want to deduce an individual value from a abstract world. To form a ideal world with a lack character of lifelikeness, he can’t help repeating a similar relationship of character by fictitious works and techniques of detective novel. Lee’s composition method that reconstructs an ideal world by endless replacement of antagonistic relationship reflects a manipulating view of the world.
