2004년 오사카 플래닛 영화자료 도서관에서 영어로 된 조선관광 선전영화 <Tyosen>이 발견되었다. 이 영화는 1939년에 일본 철도성 국제관광국이 제작한 <동경－북경: 조선과 만주국을 거쳐>의 일부분이다. 이 논문에서는 먼저 이 영화의 아카이빙 정보를 수정하고 국제관광국이 어떤 문맥에서 조선, 만주, 북경을 잇는 관광영화를 기획했는지 검토했다. 일제시기에 조선 관광은 수지맞는 산업이자 식민통치의 성과를 선전하는 국가적 기획으로 장려되었다. <동경－북경>은 관 주도로 제작된 관광 선전영화의 하나로 중일전쟁기에 대미선전을 위해 영어로 제작되었다. 그리고 이 영화의 조선 부분은 일본어로 더빙되어 <朝鮮素描>라는 이름으로 일본에서 상영되었다. 이들 필름 속 조선과 조선인의 이미지는 일제시기 인쇄미디어가 유포한 스테레오타입을 계승하고 취사선택한 것이다. 두 영화를 비교해보았을 때 이미지상의 차이는 없으나 응시의 주체와 프로파간다에 따라 내레이션에 차이가 있었다. <Tyosen>은 서양인의 이국취미를 자극하면서 근대화된 관광지 조선을 표상하는데 비해 <朝鮮素描>는 잘 알려진 매력적인 관광지인 동시에 중일전쟁의 후방으로서 조선을 강조한다. 1934년에 제작된, 조선을 일본의 플랜테이션 농장으로 묘사하는 교육용 다큐멘터리 <조선지방>과 비교해 볼 때 이 두 영화가 중일전쟁 이후의 문화 선전을 담고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이상을 통해 일제시기 기록영화에 표상된 식민지 ‘조센’의 로컬리티가 고정된 것이 아니라 제국 일본의 정세와 식민지 지배정책에 따라 상상되고 편집되었다고 결론지을 수 있다.
Abstract
Tyosen, a film advertizing the tour through Korea, was found at the Osaka Planet Film Bibliotheque in 2004. This film is one part of Tokyo- Peking: Through Tyosen and Manchoukuo made by Board of Tourist Industry, a branch organization under the Imperial Japanese Government Railways. In this paper, I corrected the existing archiving information of the film and examined why BTI needed to make an advertizing film connecting Korea, Manchuria, and Peking. Tourism of the colonized Korea was a good business and encouraged as a national project to propagate the result of Japanese colonial rule. Tokyo-Peking was an official film dubbed in English for the propaganda toward the United States. The Tyosen part was also dubbed in Japanese and introduced with a new title Chosen Sketch. The Images of Chosen and Chosenese in these films were carefully selected from the stereotypes disseminated by print media at the time. When you compare these two films, you find same images but different gaze of subjects and narrations constructed by different propaganda. Tyosen depicts Korea as an exotic and convenient destination for western travelers. At the same time, Chosen Sketch represents Korea as a well-known attraction and the rare of the Sino- Japanese War. If you compare them with the educational documentary Chosen District made in 1934, describing Korea as the plantation of Imperial Japan, you can find they reflected the change of Japanese cultural propaganda since the war broke out. Considering the reasons mentioned above, I conclude that the localities of colonized Korea in the Japanese documentaries were imagined and edited, rather than substantial, according to the Japanese situation and their ruling plans over Korea.
