시 이미지 연구의 확산과 심화를 위한 제언: 최근의 시 이미지 연구에 대하여

Abstract

‘Image’ has enjoyed a special position in poetic research for a long time. Public textbooks introduce that ‘image’ is one of the two largest constituting principles along with ‘rhythm.’ Actually, majority of the studies on modern poetry use the research on images as a starting point. Researches on image in poems have formed two trends so far. One is a research trend that links Ezra Pound to imagism to new criticism. Another is a research trend that is centered at Bachelard’s concept of ‘dynamic imagination.’ However, recent studies on image show distinct differentiation from these trends. In particular, some studies that set ‘image’ as a research methodology are attempting to tear down the boundary between poems and non-poetic writing as well as the one between literacy and non-literal writing by actively bringing research on image suggested in other areas including painting, visual art, movie, and modern philosophy into poetic image. Key arguments of these studies can be largely summarized as follows. First, the studies argue that ontological value of image should be reinstated by reproducing it and thinking about it separated from the classic context such as mimesis. Second, they argue that t ‘image’ in poem should be separated from discussions, testimonies, and arguments by letting the reinstatement of the ontological value guarantee the autonomy of image. These studies certainly infused new life into the research on image that has been at standstill for a long time. However, it is also true that they are drifting from the starting point of ‘research on poetic image’ as they do not stipulate the difference of the concept of ‘image,’ which is widely used in both of literacy and non-literal writing. This paper examined the accomplishments and problems that can arise when research on image by Rancière and Deleuze, which provided basis for the recent studies, is applied to the studies on poetic images. Through this, the study attempted to create an opportunity for the recent studies regarding ‘image’ to be spread and deepened.
