Abstract
This paper presents a study of wind load on bridges with split decks on single pier. The bridge decks of interest are split in the along wind direction; one of the split decks is facing upcoming wind while the other, referred as downwind deck, is influenced by the wake of the so-called upwind deck. Current practice in the standard for the wind load on such structures assumes that each of split decks is supported by separate piers, and provides correction factors for the wind load coefficients for a single deck. Wind load for a single girder can be estimated by the Korean standard, which is applied to split decks with correction factors ranging from 0.3 to 1.3 depending on the distance between two decks. However, this is considered inappropriate when the split decks are commonly supported by a single pier. In order to obtain appropriate wind load on bridge with split decks on a single pier, experimental investigations were carried out and the results were compared with those of computational study. The results show that downwind deck experiences relatively small wind load, affected by the wake of upwind deck; the total wind load exerted on the single pier can be highly over-estimated by the current standard
