Abstract

With the recent happening of the archive fever and the proliferation of private archive facilities, records and archive are regarded as contributory resources to reconstruct memory as well as build community identity. The changes are transforming the archivists’ role and soon, it will bring effects on historical research. Based on this presumption, this paper deals with England’s new archive formation process, specifically focusing on Bolton’s locality documentation, then popularization of history and historian’s participation in the changed society. Lastly, how to set the relationship between historians and other professionals will be discussed. As shown in the Mass-Observation Project, thanks to technological advancement and the internet, documenting and recording everyday life is possible. Recording everyday life was either impossible or ignored in the past by historians. In addition to mere recording, Pretoria Pit Disaster web sites record a web-based interactive communication. This supports the popularization of history. Cultural organizations such as museums and galleries are also actively and collaboratively taking part in history reinterpretation. With the technological advancement, there is a voice of concern that historians are alienated from the archival world where they used be the sole users. Now is the time for historians to engage in discussions with other professionals to find a way that will benefit the both.
