Abstract
The increase of infections due to vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VREF) became serious problems in large general hospitals in Korea. To determine the occurance of antimicrobial resistance among the E. faecalis isolated from chicken and human, the activities of ampicillin, ciprof1oxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, tobramycin, tetracycline, teicoplanin, and vancomycin were tested by NCCLS agar dilution method. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of vancomycin and teicoplanin against vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis (VSEF) ranged 1-2㎍/㎖ and 4-16㎍/㎖, respectively, and the MIC90 were 2㎍/㎖ and 8㎍/㎖, respectively. The MIC ranges of vancomycin and teicoplanin against VREF were 512-1024㎍/㎖ and 32-128㎍/㎖, respectively, and the MIC90 were 1024㎍/㎖ and 64㎍/㎖, respectively. The susceptibility patterns suggest the isolates of VREF and VSEF are VanA types and VanC types. When the susceptibility test by the agar dilution method against VSEF was done , all of the VSEF were resistant to gentamicin, kanamycin and tobramycin while all were susceptible to ampicillin 뻐d teicoplanin. To ampicillin and kanamycin, only 33% and 92% of the VREF were resistant, respectively, while all were resistant to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, gentamicin, tobramycin , tetracycline and teicoplanin. It is concluded that the MIC of many antimicrobial agent for the majority of VREF is very high and such strains are not rare in chickens.
