Abstract
VRE carriage rate of chicken was determined by culturing 179 samples of intestinal content of chickens collected in Iksan city during January to August 1998. Vamcomycin 6 ㎍/ml-containg bile esculin azide agar (BEAA) was used for the isolation. Species was identified by conventoinal biochemical tests. NCCLS agar dilution test was used to test glycopeptide resistance of the 16 VRE isolated from human and 52 from chickens. The genotype of vancomycin resistance isolates was determined by PCR. The following results were obtained. 1. Mean carriage rate of VRE of chickens was 43% with the highest monthly rate of 64.3% in February. 2. Prevalence of the species of the VRE from human were 4 isolates of E. casseliflovus, 3 E. faecium, 1 E. gallinarum and 8 Enterococcus spp., and those from chickens were 12 E. faecalis and 40 E. faecium 3. The MIC of vancomycin and teicoplanin against human isolates were ≥512 and ≥64 ㎍/ml, for E. faecium, and ≥512 ㎍/ml and ≥64 ㎍/ml for E. gallinarum, respectively, and ≥4 ㎍/ml and ≥256 ㎍/ml and ≥16 ㎍/ml for E. faecium, respectively. 4. Gentypes of VRE detrmined by PCR showed that the isolates from human were either vanA, vanC-1 of vanC-2/3 type, but all of the chicken isolates were vanA type. Inconclusion the carriage rate of VRE in chickens are much higher than in human, probably due to the use of avoparcin-containing feed, and sugesting possibility of spreading the strains to human.
