Abstract
Culture of dialysate from peritonitis patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) do not always give positive results, because the number of organisms is usually too low and the presence of antimicrobial agents in dialysate. In this study, sediment obtained from 50ml fluid were cultured onto lysed blood agar(LBA) and into 10ml thioglycollate broth, and 10ml uncentrifuged fluid were cultured into 30ml tryptic soy broth and thioglycollate broth. The both results were compared to those of previous studies. The positive rate with 50ml centrifuged culture was 43.9 %, compared to 39.0 % and 39.2 % with previous studies, and indicated the volume did not influence the positive rate. The proportions of the isolated bacterial species were similar to those of other studies. In conclusion, 50 ml centrifuged culture is effective as large volume culture in the diagnosis of peritonitis of CAPD patients.
