Abstract
From an ‘Open Innovation’ point of view, this paper examines the role of partner diversity, technology protection, and creativity on technological innovation performance, and endeavors to provide practical insights to the managers. Based on a multi-regression analysis of 3,400 small and medium-sized firms in Korea, we found that high degree of partner diversity, and technology protection are positively associated with firm performance. High degree of partner diversity is also positively associated with the attributes of new technologies’ creativity(novelty, usefulness). However, we also found that a moderate level of novelty is positively associated with firm performance whereas excessive novelty hampers firm performance. We call attention to the managers on the issues such as open innovation strategy, knowledge protection, and the management of creativity for technology development as well as successful commercialization of the innovation.
