Abstract

This study contributes to the literature by integrating the current opposing views on the relationship between family control of the firm and corporate social responsibility (CSR). We try to address this tension by focusing on the moderating role of board characteristics. By using a panel dataset of publicly traded firms in Korea, we hypothesize that the effect of family control (family firms vs. non-family firms) on CSR would depend upon roles of board of directors featured by equity ownership of outside directors, age diversity of board, board attendance rates, and amount of CSR-related agendas being discussed in the board meeting. We found the distinctive patterns of relationship between family control (family firms vs. non-family firms) and CSR, contingent upon the different features of board characteristics. Theoretical contributions and practical implications will be discussed.
