Abstract
This article argues that religious experience has social consequences. 21st century witnesses many people claim to have had religious experience, but the sociological explorations on its social consequences have lagged behind. Previous studies, considering religious experience as something socially constructed, have attempted to explain away spiritual experiences as a function of other things. However, this study takes a different perspective. This article adopts methodological agnosticism that is open to people's claim of supernatural experience and examines what effects religious experience can have in people's lives. According to our study, religious experience has various social consequences, such as maintaining religious organizations, increasing civic engagement and voluntary action, motivating political participation, and bringing about social change. Feelings function as a catalyst for religious experience to have social consequences. Of particular importance is the emotional energy that is generated through the interaction between God and human being. The experience of Godly Love, sparking a great amount of love energy, enables people to do genuine acts of benevolence. Those who experience complete change in their selves through religious experience can become an agent who can put into practice a sustained and real altruism which helps to fulfill the vision of a better society.
