속도와 가속화는 산업화와 정보화가 진행된 지역에 사는 현대인들의 일상생 활과 현대문명의 작동에 구조적으로 내재하는 현상이다. 1차 산업혁명기의 증 기기선, 기차와 같은 속도기계들은 기계적 속도에 의해 작동되는 사회구조를 형성하였고, 2차 산업혁명인 전기화학혁명은 사회체계들의 작동에 내재하는 속 도를 기계적 속도에서 전기적 속도로 상승시켰다. 3차 산업혁명인 정보혁명은 사회구조가 전자적 속도에 의해 변화되는 과정으로 해석될 수 있다. 이처럼 속 도와 가속화는 300년에도 미치지 못하는 짧은 기간에 사람이나 동물이 가진 자연적 속도에 의존하여 작동되던 사회체계들의 구조를 전자적 속도로 작동되 는 구조로 급격하게 변환시켰다. 산업화 · 정보화와 궤를 같이 하면서 복합적 · 다층적 · 다차원적으로 진행된 가속화는 사회변동을 유발하였으며, 이런 까닭에 서 가속화는 특히 사회학적 분석을 필요로 한다. 그러나 산업혁명 이후의 사회 변동을 분석하고 설명하는 것을 중심과제로 설정하였던 사회학은 가속화에 대 해 19세기는 물론이고 20세기 중반까지도 주목하지 않았다. 게오르크 짐멜이 화폐경제론과 대도시론에서 삶의 속도가 빨라지는 것에 관심을 두었던 것이 두 드러진 사례였을 뿐이다. 이러한 상황에서, 프랑스의 정치철학자, 매체이론가, 문화이론가인 폴 비릴리오(Paul Virilio)는 1970년대부터 속도와 가속화를 문명을 이해하는 핵심적 현상으로 보고 본격적으로 파고들어 질주학 (Dromology)를 제안하는 등 선구적인 인식을 성취하였다. 그의 저작들은 속 도문명에 대한 통찰에 획기적으로 기여하였고, 속도문명에 대한 관심을 인문사 회과학계에 촉발하는 계기가 되었다. 체계적인 학문적 저작은 특히 독일에서 활발하게 이루어졌다. 사회경제사가 페터 보르샤이트(Peter Borscheid)의 『템포 바이러스( Das Tempo-Virus)』(2004)와 사회학자 하르트무트 로사 (Hartmut Rosa)의『가속화( Beschleunigung)』(2005)는 가속화의 연구 수준을 크게 끌어올렸다. 그럼에도 가속화에 대한 학문적 논의는 서구 학계에 서도 이제 본격적으로 시작되었다고 보는 것이 타당하며, 특히 우리 학계에서 는 논의가 미미한 실정이다. 이런 맥락에서, 이 논문은 가속화를 근본적으로 이해하기 위한 하나의 시도로 서구 근대화를 가속화 과정으로 해석하고자 한 다. 합리화 · 산업화 · 도시화 · 분화 · 개별화 · 자연지배과정 · 기술화에는 가속화 가 구조적으로 내재해 있다는 것을 밝히려고 하는 것이다.
Abstract
Velocity can be characterized as one of the most important phenomena in the modern society. However, the social sciences, including sociology, seem to pay little attention to it as the subject of discourse, even though velocity and acceleration are constituent elements of the structure of the western society since the industrial revolution. Fortunately, since the inaugurating works carried out by Paul Virilio, who is a French political philosopher, also a culture-media-film theorist, and more importantly, the founder of dromology, velocity and acceleration have become the point of keen interest among academics and ordinary people as well. For instance, scholars like David Harvey, Peter Borscheid and Hartmut Rosa published the books on acceleration or tempo. This paper attempts to interpret modernization as the process of acceleration. The focus of analysis will be put on the relations between rationalization, industrialization, differentiation, individualization, the technical control and domination over nature, and mechanization and automation by virtue of the process of acceleration. As the outcome of analysis, the following will be demonstrated: the process of acceleration has been caused by the joint interactions of the forementioned processes.
