초록

The primary aim of this paper is to understand social forces behind the increased suicide behavior, one of the most troubling mental health issues facing modern Korea. An interpretive approach is used to make a sense of statistical data obtained from the Korea National Statistical Office. An attempt is made to explore the connection between the suicide trend and social factors that are most relevant to the context of Korean society and understand how changing structural and cultural forces are linked to personal self‐destructive behavior. Utilizing the Durkheim’s concepts of social integration/regulation, an assertion is made that collective cultural ambivalence created by the changing societal condition is linked to the public mental health issues and consequently increased suicidal behavior. Based on the understanding of larger societal forces, a broad policy suggestion is made for prevention of suicide.
