Abstract
This is a textual analysis of Frankenstein, both the novel written by Mary Shelley in 1818 and the film directed by Kenneth Branagh in 1994, doing with a purpose to know what science is, different from images that mass media have imposed on science, whether positive or negative. Through reviewing into the narrative structure of creating human lifes, it could ascertain that there were such scientific norms as universalism, communism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism. But scientists did not abide by these norms. That is why science was institutionalized into a male-centered competition system which excludes not only women but such cultural values as respect and care, wisdom and love, intuition and sensitivity, etc. By showing tragedies that male-dominated science brought down ruin, both the fiction and film of Frankenstein suggest such alternative norms as equalitarianism, communicationism, and demolishing dichotomous boundaries.
