초록

작은 교회는 숫자에 있어서는 여전히 다수를 점유하고 있지만, 목회 현장이나 신학적차원에서 작은 교회를 위한 지원과 관심이 충분하지 않은 게 현실이다. 1970∼80년대를주도하던 성장지향 패러다임을 여전히 고수하는 교단들은 작은 교회의 목회자들을 위한연장교육이나 재교육을 통한 목회지도력의 지속적인 혁신보다 복지 차원의 재정후원이나단발적인 지원에 주로 초점을 맞추고 있다. 예비 목회자들을 위한 신학교육의 상황 역시크게 다르지 않아서 졸업생 대부분이 작은 교회에서 목회자로 활동할 수밖에 없는 현실에도 불구하고 신학대학원의 교육과정에 작은 교회의 목회를 위한 과목들을 충분히 반영하지 않고 있다. 현재 작은 교회가 직면하고 있는 위기에 주목하면서 기독교교육학적 차원에서 해결의 단서를 확인하는 한편, 작은 교회를 위한 구체적인 교육 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 삼고 있는 이 글은 일차적으로 작은 교회의 정의와 성격에 관한 논의를 살펴본다. 계속해서 최근의 작은 교회들의 유형들을 차례대로 정리하고 나서 작은 교회의 교육적 특징과 작은 교회를 위한 기독교교육 방안을 제시하는 것으로 결론을 맺는다.

Abstract

Most churches in South Korea are small membership churches. More than 90% churches have an average worship attendance of less than 100-200and more than half have an average worship attendance of less than 100. Small membership churches can be categorized into three types: ⑴survival-oriented churches, ⑵ small membership-oriented churches, ⑶theological-oriented churches. Small membership churches at large are facing a crisis of immense proportions. Many of these churches are in a similar position-the attendance has dropped over the years, the congregation has aged, the facility needs maintenance, young people have moved away and finances are tight. Small churches, in short, struggle for membership,for money, and for survival. In this article, various definitions and solutions to solve a lot of problems faced with small churches are reviewed to suggest directions for the development of Christian education in the small membership church. This article begins with an overview of basic problems surrounding current discussion of the small membership church. Next,three types of small church are explored. Finally, several educational characteristics of small churches(the story, the third place, and the laity)and implications for Christian education in the small membership church are suggested.
