Abstract
Recently in the service industry, humor used by service providers during the communication process with customers has had important impact on service assessment and customer satisfaction. The use of humor is a very important factor for forming people relations and has positive effects. Despite this, there were only a handful of studies that examined the application of the concept of humor and its effects in the service sector. In other words, most humor-related studies were dealt with in psychology and education, and seldom in the service situation. The purpose of this study based on such theoretical background is as follows. First, it aimed at examining what kind of impact the humor orientation of service employees at the service contact point had on the empathy abilities of cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Second, after investigating the relationship of empathy abilities and job satisfaction of service employees, it aims at examining the relationship between the service employee’s job satisfaction with customer orientation. In order to verify this hypothesis, surveys for this study were conducted on golf service aides. Upon distributing questionnaires to a total of 200 people, excluding those insincerely completed, 184 questionnaires were used for statistical analysis. For the statistical analysis, SPSS and AMOS 20.0 were used to carry out the structural equation model. When summarizing the hypothesis, it is as follows. It was found that humor orientation of service contact point employees had beneficial effects on both cognitive empathy and emotional empathy. Second, it was evident that in the relationship between the cognitive empathy and emotional empathy of service contact point employees with that of job satisfaction, they had positive impacts on each other. Finally, it was verified that the job satisfaction and customer orientation of service contact point employees had positive significant correlations. Therefore, this study showed that the humor orientation of service contact employees played a very important role in raising one’s empathy abilities during the communication process with customers, and that through this, it had a positive impact on satisfaction and customer orientation for one’s duties.
