Abstract

This paper aims to explore how spatial movement, temporal distance, gradual change, and continuous property, which the term away generally means, are linked, rather than they are semantically independent of each other. The four meanings are found to have the semantic distinctive features [+DEPARTURE, -DESTINATION] in common. The additional feature [+GRADUALNESS] is derived from the two distinctive features when a verb has the semantic feature [+LOSS], and another additional feature [+CONTINUATION] results from the interaction of the two distinctive features when the semantic features [MOVE, LOSS] of the relevant verb are neutral in their values. And in this case, a certain syntactic constraint is needed so that spatial movement and continuous property may be distinguished. Furthermore, the paper reveals that the two derived features [+GRADUALNESS] and [+CONTINUATION] are not intrinsically different. They are exactly the same except that the feature [+GRADUALNESS] appears only with the so-called loss verb. Another finding is that the natural combination of away and at in the away-at construction stems from the fact that the semantic features of the two terms fit in with each other.
