Abstract

Educational evaluation is an activity that judges the meaning and value of the act of education. It is an educational activity indispensable for improving the quality of education, not only the evaluation of the individual but also the evaluation of the institution which examines the responsibility of the institution. The purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning and role of evaluation in Christian education and to promote such evaluation practices based on the principles of Biblical evaluation. This paper first looked at general meanings of evaluation and the meanings in the Bible. The evaluation and assessment of judging and distinguishing values by examining concrete information was also found in the Bible. Evaluation in Christian education aims to provide a comprehensive function – such as evaluation ‘for’, evaluation ‘of’, and evaluation ‘as’- that is applied to the institutional evaluation as well as education assessment. The evaluation practiced in the Christian education field is to be a kind of doxology, and the learning and education experience of the students is under God's control, and play a sacred role to appeal and to declare the responsibility of the education practice in front of God. Based on these meanings and roles of biblical evaluation, this paper presents four principles of Biblical evaluation: the principles of responsibility, absolute evaluation, growth and process, and celebration and encouragement. The first principle of responsibility needs to be conducted in front of God, to be responsible. Assessment as a self-study activity that checks for self-learning on its own, or self-study of an institution is an example of responsible activity reviewing the accountability of education. The second principle of absolute evaluation means not to be compared but to place the criterion of evaluation in the sincerity of God's will. The third principle of growth and process-centeredness is to live according to God's standard of evaluation rather than comparing education results with others. Finally, the principle of joy, celebration, and encouragement is a principle that tells how members should experience emotionally through evaluations taking place in the Christian education field. Implication and further issues of evaluation in Christian education settings are also discussed in the paper.
