Abstract

The purpose of this study was to classify consumer types by consumer information confusion on online information search and to demonstrate predictive factors (demographic characteristics, information search value, consumer information sources, and consumer information literacy) for each type. The results of this study were as follows. First, as the concept of consumer information confusion was divided into overload confusion and distrust confusion, the final model yielded three latent classes of overload confusion and distrust confusion. The three groups included 1) a high confusion group (group 1: 35.0%) with high levels of overload confusion and distrust confusion, 2) a medium confusion group (group 2: 39.1%) with middle levels of overload confusion and distrust confusion, and 3) a low confusion group (group 3: 25.9%) with low levels of overload confusion and distrust confusion. Second, analyzing the difference in classified types according to demographic variable found gender and monthly income showed statistically significant effects for all three groups. Third, factors affecting the probability of belonging to the high confusion group (group 1) compared to the medium confusion group (group 2) were hedonic value, utilitarian value, marketer-oriented sources, consumer-oriented sources, task definition, and use of information. Compared to the medium confusion group (group 2), men, utilitarian value, neutral sources, and task definition was found to affect the probability of belonging to the low confusion group (group 3). Utilitarian value and task definition were revealed as factors that increased the potential for inclusion in the high and low confusion groups.
