Abstract
This research extended the prior research by examining whether the interdependent selfversus independent self could result in differences in financial risk-taking behaviors. Accordingto the most prior researches, independent selves were more willing to seek risk-taking behaviorsthan interdependent selves. But, according to the other researches in the cushion hypothesis(Weber and Hsee 1998, Mandel 2003), when the interdependent self is activated, thoughts offriends and family members are brought to the forefront, and these friends and family membersmight offer a cushion that lessens the effect of a financial loss. Therefore, individuals whoseinterdepndent selves were activated, when compared with those whose independent selves wereactivated, were willing to take more financial risk-taking behaviors. So, we examined how self-construal influenced the consumers' risk-taking behaviors in an experimental setting. Also, weinvestigated the moderating role of tie strength in the relations of self-construal and risk-taking behaviors. The experimental results also showed that participants of independent self-construal havemore risk-taking behaviors regardless of tie strength. Also, participants of interdependentself-construal have more risk-taking behaviors in the case of strong ties(vs. weak ties). Butthese effects disappeared when the value of ownership for alnernative was high.
