초록
The serial verb construction in Korean has been studied extensively due to the complexity and diversity of the construction. Accordingly, there hasn't been much agreement on its syntactic or semantic properties. The current paper deals with a particular set of so-called serial verb constructions in Korean, and seek to identify its semantic property by examining the behavior of its constituent verbs. The aim of this paper is two-fold. Firstly, it argues against the proposal that the manner-result complementarity espoused by Levin and Rapaport Hovav hold in Korean. While Levin and Rapaport Hovav have long been claiming that the two semantic components are not lexicalized by a single verb, Beaver and Koontz-Garboden (2017) objected that some verbs are found to entail both manner and result. In line with Beaver and Koontz-Garboden's analysis of climb, I show that some Korean verbs can have both manner and result components. Secondly, in the Korean serial verb construction, I claim that the semantic properties of verbs, such as manner and result, do not play a crucial role. I propose, given two verbs employed in the construction, a structural constraint on the relation between them: namely, the event denoted by the first verb serves as a sufficient condition for a necessary condition for the event denoted by the second verb.
