Abstract
First, this paper attempts to account for structural properties of coordination construction suggested in the previous study, focusing on the case assignment and number agreement in the coordination construction (CC). When assigning the case in the CC, by eliminating the barrier of &P by L-marking, the case assigner assigns the nominative or the accusative case directly to the first conjunct. Then, the case assigner percolates the case assignment capability to the conjunction. At this point the percolated conjunction assigns the undetermined case to the second conjunct. Consequently, it is possible for the second conjunct to check either the nominative or the accusative case. Second, this paper is to show how to explain the asymmetric number agreement between the subject and the verb in the CC according to sentence order. Considering the number agreement in the CC, in case of SV order, the subject agrees with the whole conjunct, on the other hand, in case of VS order, the subject agrees with the first conjunct. Based on this, there-construction and interrogative sentences are used as typical examples. To explain this phenomenon, I suggest that Bošković's (1997) expletive lowering analysis and Munn's (1999) unmarked derivation principle comply with the economy. At last I will look over their analysis and point out the problems unexplained by this theory.
